Fouad Bellamine was born in 1950 in Fez, Morocco. He lives and works between Paris and Rabat.
In the 1970s, Fouad Bellamine took a keen interest in the debate around identity in Morocco and its impact on art. This would later lead him to say: “there is no Moroccan painting, there are only Moroccan painters“. But his interest in new art movements in the West (particularly installation art) did not wane his partiality for painting. Arcs, arches, vaults where the body’s gestures are consubstantial with the act of painting and the notion of “making of space” inhabit his paintings. The quest for light is the foundation of his pictorial space. His paintings are a free improvisation that calls for contemplation and quiet silence.
Fouad Bellamine’s works have been included in several prestigious collections including the Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris, the Fonds National d’Art Contemporain, Paris, the Kinda Foundation, the Mathaf, Qatar Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
